Most photographers out to capture the sunset go home once the sun has dipped below the horizon. My fellow photographers during my session at La Corbière last week were no exception. But it is always worth waiting around for a little longer. If they had, they would have seen La Corbière lighting up. A different mood from yesterday’s shot, taken at exactly the same location only minutes earlier. Doesn’t the landscape at low tide look otherworldly?
This is La Corbière, the lighthouse on Jersey’s South Western tip. It is the shot I was taking when I posted this: Waiting for the light. Of course, there was a much better sunset the night after I was here. Hey ho.
I could live by St.Ouen’s beach and have something new to photograph every day for the rest of my life. St.Ouen’s beach is on the West of the Island. The tower silhouetted here is La Rocco, one of the many Martello Towers in Jersey, built as defensive fortifications during the Napoleonic war.
Now we are back from our travels, I am looking forward to catching up with my favourite blogs.

Our summer trip continues. We are now on Jersey in the Channel Islands. The day began for the family with surfing in St.Ouen’s Bay while I enjoyed a two hour photowalk along the sands. Then it was waffles and strawberries for breakfast. Perfect. These shots were taken with my iPhone.
Our summer holiday this year will be spent at Lyme Regis, a lovely little town on the coast of Dorset. It is steeped in history and features in Jane Austen’s Persuasion:
the principal street almost hurrying into the water, the Walk to the Cobb, skirting round the pleasant little bay, which, in the season, is animated with bathing machines and company…are what the stranger’s eye will seek
The Cobb is Lyme Regis’s famous harbour wall. In Persuasion, one of the characters takes a tumble off the Cobb. In a later novel, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, John Fowles immortalised “quite simply the most beautiful sea rampart on the south coast of England”.
Lyme Regis is on The Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site for its wealth of fossils from the Jurassic period. It was here that Mary Anning (1799-1847) discovered, at the tender age of twelve, the first complete ichthyosaur. She went on to become a renowned palaeontologist when the science was in its infancy. Lyme Regis Museum, a fascinating place to visit in its own right, is built on the site of Mary’s home.
A panoramic view of Arches National Park and the La Sal mountains in Utah to mark my 100th post. Utah is one of the most amazing states I have visited in America, so far. The landscape is vast, magnificent, empty. So different from anything we have here. I hope to return before long.
I enjoyed a brief trip this morning, in the company of friends, to photograph the lavender at Banstead. The heavens soon opened but, for a few minutes, it was perfect.
Our visit to Monument Valley in April 2009 happily coincided with a full moon.
A short post today. This scene was taken on my local stretch of the Wey Navigation, a historic waterway that runs for 20 miles between Weybridge and Goldalming, Surrey. Last year I published a series of articles about the Navigation in some local magazines. The text (and some more images) of the first article which includes this picture is here. I will do a more detailed post on the Navigation, its history and wildlife, this weekend.
