Hundatora

Dartmoor

f/14, 1/24, ISO 400, 18mm

Hundatora is a ruined medieval village near Hound Tor on Dartmoor. It is likely it was abandoned either because of deteriorating climate conditions or the Black Death (bubonic plague). Somehow it seemed to me to suit a slightly brooding, black and white treatment.

  1. It always amazes me how so often, very little of the walls are left standing on old abandoned dwellings. Always makes me wonder where the stone went or if it is still there under the grass.

    • I wonder if it was taken to be reused in other structures. Several of the locks in the Wey Navigation, a local waterway built in the 17th century, are lined with bricks from the ruins of Oatlands Palace, one of Henry VIII’s hunting lodges.
